A while back, our lower secondary students attended disaster management training led by Eddie Hew, gaining hands-on skills in safety, first aid, teamwork, and emergency preparedness.
During the session on fire safety, Eddie Hew taught students how to identify different types of fires and respond appropriately using the correct fire extinguishers. He demonstrated the PASS technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. He emphasized the importance of staying calm, alerting others, and evacuating safely when necessary. In addition, he showed students how to properly use a fire blanket to smother small fires, such as kitchen fires, by carefully covering the flames and cutting off the oxygen supply. Through practical demonstrations and guided practice, students learned how to handle small fire incidents safely while prioritizing personal safety and teamwork.
During the training, Eddie Hew also teaches students important disaster management skills for fires, floods, and earthquakes. He guides them in understanding potential risks, recognizing warning signs, and responding appropriately during different emergency situations. Through engaging discussions and practical activities, students learn how to stay calm, think clearly, and work together to ensure their own safety and the safety of others. The session helps build their awareness, resilience, and confidence in handling real-life emergencies responsibly.
In conclusion, the disaster management training serves as a meaningful and empowering experience for our lower secondary students. Under the guidance of Eddie Hew, they not only gain practical knowledge but also develop a stronger sense of responsibility, resilience, and teamwork. The skills and awareness acquired throughout the sessions prepare them to respond calmly and confidently in times of crisis. More importantly, the training reinforces the value of preparedness and reminds students that being informed and proactive can make a significant difference in keeping themselves and their community safe.
